Deadly Turn in Abuja: Pro‑Palestinian March Erupts in Violence
Thousands gathered in Abuja on International Quds Day, joining the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) to show solidarity with Palestine. However, what began as a peaceful march quickly turned violent near Banex Plaza in Wuse 2. Tensions flared as protesters chanted and carried Palestinian flags, with some reportedly throwing stones at security forces.
Security personnel responded with gunfire to disperse the crowd. According to AP, one officer and five IMN members were killed—while other reports cited up to twelve fatalities—including 11 protesters and one soldier. Nineteen arrests were made amid scenes of chaos and cordoned streets.
Amnesty International has called for an independent investigation, condemning the use of deadly force on demonstrators and urging accountability for breaches of human rights.
