Thousands in Nepal rally for monarchy restoration under ex-king
Since March 9, thousands in Nepal have gathered in Tinkune and Kathmandu advocating for reinstating the Hindu monarchy under former King Gyanendra Shah.
Pro-monarchy protesters cite repetitious government instability and corruption as motives for restoring the monarchy. A 2024 survey suggested nearly half the population approves reversing secularism.
Clashes and some property damage have followed as authorities responded to rallies. Protest leaders remain steadfast, planning further demonstrations until constitutional changes are achieved.
The movement reflects growing disillusionment with democracy, testing Nepal’s evolving governance systems amid competing traditions and modern expectations.
