The Anambra state obiora iwa iji festival to kick-off today 




Obiora/Iwa-ji Festival kick off today 18th of October in a grand style in the obosi community of Anambra state.


The festival is a week program with different activities with participants within it community and The main Obiora Igwe Obosi of the traditional ruler his royal highness Igwe Chidubem Iweka (Eze Iweka III).


The Obiora/Iwa-Ji festival is an annual harvest festival that usually take place at the end of the rainy season to thank the god for the bless full harvest and the beginning of the next farming cycle.


This festival is widely known as New Yam Festival of the Igbo people,in simple terms meaning cutting the yam or eating the yam, it is also a dual event that includes the  it is also after the festival that new yams are to be farmed as it is forbidden traditionally until the rituals are performed.


Leaders within the community use the period of the festival to settle disputes within the community and foster unity before the  main celebration of the new yam.


Their are also activities that are to take place that Includes Obiora award/Gala night, Teens Fair Day, rich cultural heritage, Youth Conferencedance and masquerade, a scholarship scheme worth 50 million for pupils, students within the local government.
