The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results for the 2025
West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates. The announcement was made by the Head of the WAEC National Office in Nigeria, Dr. Amos Dangut, at a press briefing in Lagos.
Key Highlights of the 2025 WASSCE Results:
Total Candidates: A total of 1,969,313 candidates from 23,554 secondary schools across Nigeria sat for the examination, which was conducted between April and June.
Performance Decline: There was a significant drop in performance compared to the previous year. Only 38.32% of candidates (754,545 students) achieved credits in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. This is a sharp 33.8% decrease from the 72.12% success rate recorded in 2024.
Reason for Decline: Dr. Dangut attributed the decline primarily to the Council's new strategy of serializing objective test papers in core subjects such as Mathematics, English, Biology, and Economics. This was a deliberate measure to combat examination malpractice and collusion, compelling students to rely on their own preparation.
Results Status: While the results of 1,517,517 candidates (77.06%) have been fully processed and released, the results for 451,796 candidates (22.94%) are still being processed due to technical issues that the Council assured would be resolved shortly.
Withheld Results: The results of 192,089 candidates (9.75%) were withheld due to reported cases of examination malpractice, including the use of mobile phones and organized cheating. This figure, however, is a slight improvement from the 11.92% withheld in 2024.
Gender Performance: Of the candidates who achieved credits in the key subjects, female students (53.99%) slightly outperformed their male counterparts (46.01%).
Special Needs Candidates: The results for 12,178 candidates with special needs have also been released. This group included students with visual, hearing, and physical impairments, among others.
How to Check Results: Candidates can check their results on the official WAEC website, www.waecdirect.org, or via SMS. They will need their examination number, examination year (2025), and a valid e-PIN/serial number from their registration.
