Widespread thunderstorms are currently affecting Thailand, driven by a low-pressure system over northern Laos and Vietnam and the persistent southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. This weather pattern has prompted the Thai Meteorological Department to issue warnings for residents and mariners.
Regional Forecast Breakdown:
Bangkok and Vicinity: The metropolitan area is experiencing significant thunderstorms, with rain covering an estimated 60% of the region. This poses a risk of flash flooding and traffic disruption, particularly during the afternoon and evening.
Northern Region: Scattered thunderstorms are expected in about 40% of the area, affecting provinces such as Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Tak, and Nan.
Northeastern Region: Thunderstorms are forecast for approximately 30% of the region, with the heaviest rainfall expected in provinces like Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen, and Ubon Ratchathani.
Central Plain: About 40% of the Central Plain is under a thunderstorm warning. Provinces most affected include Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Samut Songkhram, and Samut Sakhon.
Eastern Region: This region is experiencing thunderstorms over about 60% of its area, particularly in Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat.
Marine Conditions: Caution is advised for mariners in both the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. Waves are forecast to be around one meter but could reach over two meters in areas with thunderstorms.
The Thai Meteorological Department urges the public to be cautious of severe conditions and the potential for flash floods and overflows, especially in low-lying areas and near waterways.
