The committee, in a statement, described the demonstrations as "unfortunate, unwarranted, and inconsistent with the values of African unity and regional cooperation."

The Protests: The "Nigeria-Must-Go" protests, which gained traction via a viral social media video on July 29, 2025, involved a group of Ghanaians demanding the expulsion of Nigerians from their country. Protesters cited allegations that Nigerians are responsible for a rise in crime, including prostitution and ritual killings, and are engaged in activities that violate Ghanaian societal norms.
Senate's Official Stance: Senator Aniekan Bassey, Chairman of the Senate Committee, issued a statement calling for calm and urging both nations to protect their longstanding diplomatic and socio-cultural ties. He emphasized that such protests violate the spirit of African brotherhood and the fundamental principles of the ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement of Persons.
Nigerian Government's Response: The Nigerian government is actively addressing the issue through diplomatic channels. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, has reportedly met with her Ghanaian counterparts to discuss the concerns. Additionally, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), led by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has appealed for calm and cautioned against the "blanket" generalization of all Nigerians as criminals.
