NDLEA Intensifies War on Drugs with Major Airport Seizure and Nationwide Campaign
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Nigeria has been actively prosecuting its "War Against Drug Abuse" (WADA) campaign, resulting in a number of significant drug busts and arrests. The following information has been updated for improved clarity and accuracy.
On Sunday, August 3, 2025, the NDLEA announced a major interception at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. Operatives seized a large shipment of cocaine and 225mg tramadol pills, which were cleverly hidden inside 71 vehicle side mirrors. The consignment was intended for export to Libreville, Gabon. Following the initial interception, a popular cargo agent was arrested, and further investigation led to the arrest of a second suspect and the recovery of additional cocaine from his home.
These recent seizures are part of a continuous, nationwide effort. With support from the Presidency, the NDLEA has, in the last two years, arrested over 40,000 suspects, secured over 8,600 convictions, and confiscated more than 5,507 metric tons of illicit drugs. A major focus of this campaign is on opioids, with the agency having seized over one billion tramadol pills in the past year alone.
The NDLEA's strategy extends beyond law enforcement to include prevention. The agency has partnered with the Federal Ministry of Education to introduce compulsory drug integrity tests for students in tertiary institutions and to revise the secondary school curriculum to include drug education. This initiative is a proactive measure aimed at protecting the youth. Additionally, the NDLEA views its anti-drug efforts as a direct contribution to national security, believing that a reduction in drug abuse will help combat terrorism, banditry, and other criminal activities often linked to drug use.
