The Labour Party (LP) in Nigeria remains mired in internal turmoil following a bifurcated Appeal Court ruling. Two factions within the party have independently declared themselves winners of the ruling, deepening the leadership crisis. Each side insists its claim is legally binding and politically valid.
The court judgment purportedly addressed longstanding disputes over national leadership, vacancies, and convention authority. Instead of resolving matters, it indirectly fueled rival claims from both camps. Supporters of each faction have rallied, escalating tension within the party hierarchy.
Efforts at mediation have so far failed, with neither faction willing to compromise. Party stakeholders warn the impasse could undermine LP's credibility ahead of 2027 electoral contests. Rival lawyers are being consulted to interpret the ambiguous court text.
The division threatens the party’s ability to unify on candidate selection and national strategy. Political analysts warn the dispute could weaken LP’s influence in Nigeria’s multiparty system.
