Kano Commissioner Resigns Following Probe into Drug Kingpin Bail
Alhaji Ibrahim Namadi, the Commissioner for Transportation in Kano State, has resigned from his position. This resignation comes just hours after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf received a report from an investigative committee that was probing Namadi's controversial involvement in the bail of a suspected drug kingpin, Sulaiman Danwawu.
Details of the Investigation and Indictment:
The Bail Controversy: The issue arose when it was discovered that Namadi had stood as a surety for Sulaiman Danwawu, who had been arrested and arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on drug trafficking charges. The court's bail conditions were exceptionally strict, requiring a member of the Kano State Executive Council to act as a surety.
Governor's Response: Following a public outcry, Governor Abba Yusuf established a seven-man special investigative committee to look into the matter. The committee was tasked with uncovering the full circumstances and recommending appropriate action.
Committee's Findings: The committee's report, submitted to the governor, found that Namadi had acted negligently and was therefore "culpable" for his actions.
The report stated that Namadi had voluntarily applied to stand as a surety for the defendant on July 18, 2025.
He swore an affidavit confirming his status as a serving commissioner and pledged to abide by the bail conditions.
The committee concluded that Namadi failed to conduct proper due diligence, even though he had "constructive and actual knowledge" of the serious drug-related nature of the charges against the suspect.
His actions were deemed to contradict the state government's firm stance against drug trafficking and abuse.
No Evidence of Financial Gain: The investigation did find no evidence of a prior relationship between Namadi and the drug suspect, nor was there any indication that his actions were influenced by financial benefits. It was also established that he did not deposit any money for the bail, despite earlier reports alleging a N5 million or $30,000 bribe.
Namadi's Resignation:
Official Statement: Namadi's resignation was officially announced in a statement from the Director General, Media and Publicity, Kano Government House, Sanusi Dawakin Tofa.
Reason for Resignation: Namadi stated that his decision was made in the "interest of the public" and in light of the "sensitive nature of the matter." While maintaining his innocence, he acknowledged the "weight of public perception" and the need to "protect the values" of the administration. He reaffirmed his loyalty to the government's commitment to fighting drug abuse.
Governor's Acceptance: Governor Abba Yusuf has accepted the resignation and wished the former commissioner success in his future endeavors. He also advised all political appointees to exercise caution on sensitive matters and seek proper clearance from higher authorities.
