Gunmen Kill Two Police Officers in Imo State Ambush
An attack by gunmen on Sunday, August 3, 2025, in Imo State has resulted in the deaths of two police officers. The incident took place along the Okigwe axis, within the Okigwe Local Government Area.
Details of the Attack:
Victims: The two slain officers were part of the security detail for Kingsley Ikoro, the Majority Leader of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly.
The Incident: According to a police source, the lawmaker's convoy was traveling when one of the vehicles suffered a mechanical breakdown. While the lawmaker proceeded with other vehicles, the two officers remained behind to wait for a mechanic. It was during this period of vulnerability that they were ambushed by gunmen who opened fire, killing them instantly. The assailants also stole the officers' rifles before fleeing the scene.
Official Response: The Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, confirmed the attack and the deaths of the officers. He stated that the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has ordered a full-scale manhunt for the perpetrators. Tactical and operational resources have been deployed to the area with the aim of apprehending the killers.
Context of Insecurity: This latest incident is part of a series of violent attacks in the region. It follows a similar attack less than two weeks prior, where gunmen killed several people and injured many others across three communities in the Ideato North Local Government Area of the state. These events highlight the persistent security challenges facing the South-East region.
