Federal Government Pledges Infrastructure Support for Kannywood
The Federal Government of Nigeria has pledged to prioritize infrastructure development for the Northern film sector, widely known as Kannywood. This commitment was announced by the Minister of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, during the official unveiling of the Arewa International Film Festival (AIFF) in Abuja.
Musawa acknowledged that the Nigerian creative industry, including Kannywood, has long struggled with a "dearth of infrastructure." She confirmed that the federal government is actively working to develop essential film infrastructure, such as studios and film villages, to support the entire creative sector's growth.
The Minister assured stakeholders that Kannywood would be "fully integrated" into this development process. While a comprehensive, nationwide approach is being taken, she emphasized that a conscious effort is being made to ensure the Northern film sector receives adequate support.
Addressing previous criticisms, Musawa explained that her new ministry's initial focus was on establishing a foundational framework of policies, incentives, and regulations for the entire creative space. With that foundation now in place, the government's focus is shifting toward regional implementation with a more inclusive approach.
Musawa praised the Arewa International Film Festival as a "strategic platform" to showcase the rich cultural heritage and talent of Northern Nigeria. She noted that government support for the festival would help address critical issues like capacity building, skills acquisition, and networking opportunities within the region's creative community.
Both government officials and festival organizers believe this support will have a measurable impact, leading to job creation, youth empowerment, and cultural diplomacy. The AIFF is seen as a crucial step in amplifying the creative and cultural expressions of Northern Nigeria and ensuring its contributions are prominently featured in both national and global dialogues.
