Appeal court suspends ruling reinstating Sanusi as emir pending Supreme Court decision.
A recent ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja has placed a hold on an earlier January 2025 Appeal Court decision reinstating Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as Emir of Kano. The suspension will remain in effect pending final judgment by the Supreme Court, prolonging the longstanding royal dispute.
Sanusi’s initial reinstatement in May 2024 came after Kano’s state government repealed laws underpinning his deposition by a previous administration. The reversal was seen as politically charged, tied to evolving alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
Following his reinstatement, Sanusi publicly criticized President Tinubu’s economic reforms—a move interpreted by some observers as political posturing ahead of possible elective ambitions. His reinstatement has become a focal point in Kano’s power dynamics involving APC, NNPP, and state elites.
The prolonged legal process raises questions about the intersection of traditional authority and political influence. If unresolved, the crisis could further polarize rival factions in northern power circles ahead of national elections.
