Dozens of Migrants Killed in Yemen Shipwreck Tragedy
A devastating shipwreck in the Gulf of Aden has claimed the lives of at least 68 African migrants, with dozens more missing and feared dead, according to the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM). The tragedy occurred on Sunday, August 3, 2025, when a boat carrying 154 migrants, primarily from Ethiopia, capsized off the coast of Yemen's Abyan province.
Only 12 people are confirmed to have survived the disaster. Rescue teams and local authorities have recovered the bodies of 54 migrants who washed ashore in the Khanfar district, and an additional 14 were found and taken to a hospital in the provincial capital, Zinjibar. A large-scale search operation is ongoing for the 74 migrants who remain unaccounted for.
This incident is the latest in a series of deadly events on one of the world's most dangerous migration routes. The IOM has repeatedly highlighted the perils faced by migrants who use this corridor, fleeing conflict and poverty in the Horn of Africa in hopes of reaching wealthier Gulf nations. Smugglers often transport these individuals in dangerously overcrowded and unseaworthy vessels, making these journeys incredibly risky.
The IOM has renewed its call for increased protection for migrants and for the international community to address the root causes of irregular migration.
