Community Protests After Deadly Attack in Benue State
Residents of the Yelewata community in Benue State have blocked the Makurdi-Abuja federal highway to protest a recent attack by suspected armed herdsmen. The attack reportedly left three people dead and several others injured.
Details of the Incident:
The Attack: According to reports, suspected armed herdsmen invaded the Yelewata community in the Guma Local Government Area on Monday morning. They allegedly killed three individuals and injured three more.
The Protest: Following the killings, angry villagers placed the bodies of their relatives on the highway, bringing traffic to a complete halt.
Official Response: A local youth leader, Achii Mathias, confirmed that the governor's Security Adviser and the Guma Local Government Chairman were at the scene. The Benue State Police Command spokesperson has not yet provided an official statement.
This incident is part of a recurring pattern of violence in Benue State, a region grappling with long-standing conflicts between nomadic herders and local farmers. A similar attack on the same community in June also resulted in numerous deaths and subsequent protests.
