World's First Public Relations University to Emerge in Nasarawa
In a landmark development set to reshape global leadership and communication, the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has partnered with the Nasarawa State Government to establish the University of Public Relations and Leadership (UPRL). This ambitious institution, touted as the first of its kind worldwide, is slated for a formal unveiling in November 2026, coinciding with Nigeria's hosting of the prestigious World Public Relations Forum (WPRF).
A Global Vision for Ethical Leadership
The UPRL will be strategically located in Gudi, Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. Dr. Ike Neliaku, President of the NIPR, emphasized that the university isn't just a Nigerian initiative but a global intervention. It reportedly has the backing of 126 countries under the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management, the global umbrella body for PR institutions. This widespread international support highlights a perceived need for specialized training to address leadership deficits, particularly across the African continent.
The university's core mission is to exclusively focus on public relations and leadership studies. Its aim is to cultivate a new generation of credible leaders adept in ethical leadership and strategic communication. Former Minister of Information, Jerry Gana, has championed the vision for UPRL to become a hub for cutting-edge research and digital learning, underscoring the critical importance of innovation and technological prowess to meet global standards.
Nasarawa State Reaps Benefits
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between NIPR and the Nasarawa State Government includes significant benefits for the host state:
20 full scholarship slots annually will be reserved for qualified students of Nasarawa origin, ensuring representation from all 13 local government areas.
50 additional concessionary admission slots annually will be available for government-sponsored candidates.
Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has demonstrated strong commitment to the project, allocating 100 hectares of land for the university. He has also pledged support for its development, including fencing and the construction of essential meeting facilities for international stakeholders.
Reshaping Africa's Leadership Narrative
Proponents believe the UPRL presents a pivotal opportunity to reshape Africa's leadership narrative and redefine the global role of public relations in governance, development, and diplomacy. It aspires to be a premier center for manpower development and capacity building, not only for indigenes of Nasarawa but also for the entire nation and the broader African continent.
