Trump Toughens Stance on Putin, Approves More Weapons for Ukraine

WASHINGTON D.C. – In a significant shift in tone, U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly escalated his criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin over the ongoing war in Ukraine.¹ Trump announced he is approving additional defensive weapons for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's government, overriding a previous pause imposed by the Pentagon.²

Speaking to reporters, Trump stated he was "not happy" with the Russian president, asserting that "Putin is killing too many people."³ At a cabinet meeting, he reiterated his commitment to backing Ukraine's defense and promised continued U.S. military aid, praising Ukrainian troops as "brave."⁴

Trump emphasized that the U.S. has provided Ukraine with "the best equipment ever made," including "Javelins" (anti-tank missiles) and other advanced weaponry that has been "amazingly effective" in the conflict. He also called for an acceleration of U.S. defense contractors to produce military equipment at a "much higher rate."

When pressed on his relationship with Putin, Trump described the Russian leader as "very nice all the time, but it turns out to be meaningless."⁵ He expressed strong displeasure with Putin's refusal to move towards a ceasefire, noting it was the second time in 24 hours he had publicly criticized this stance.⁶

Furthermore, Trump confirmed he is "looking very strongly" at a Senate bill that would impose severe sanctions on Russia and countries purchasing its oil, petroleum products, natural gas, or uranium.⁷ He labeled it an "optional bill" indicating his discretion in signing it into law.

In response to Trump's remarks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia takes the comments "quite calmly," acknowledging Trump's "tough style."⁸ Peskov added that Trump "now understands the Ukrainian conflict is more difficult to resolve than he initially believed," reiterating Moscow's long-held position that a quick resolution is not possible. He also expressed hope for continued dialogue with Washington despite the resumption of arms supplies.
