Made in Nigeria Phones! Tecno and Infinix Maker, Transsion, Partners with FG to Build Multi-Billion Naira Assembly Plant in Lagos!
In a monumental development for Nigeria's technology sector, Transsion Holdings, the company behind the nation's most popular smartphone brands—Tecno, Infinix, and Itel—has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Government to establish a state-of-the-art assembly plant in Lagos. The deal, facilitated by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), represents a significant step towards domesticating tech manufacturing and boosting the country's digital economy agenda.
The multi-billion naira facility will be dedicated to the assembly of smartphones and other smart devices, primarily for the Nigerian market, with plans to export to other West African nations in the future. The project is expected to generate over 3,000 direct and indirect jobs, providing crucial employment opportunities and fostering valuable skills transfer in electronics assembly and quality control. This move is anticipated to significantly reduce Nigeria's reliance on imported mobile devices and stabilize local pricing.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, lauded the investment as a major victory for Nigeria's local content policy. "This partnership with Transsion Holdings is proof of the vibrant investment climate and the immense potential of our tech ecosystem. It aligns perfectly with our goal to not just be consumers of technology, but producers as well. This will reduce capital flight, create jobs, and build a new generation of skilled Nigerian technicians," he stated.
For the average Nigerian consumer, the establishment of this local assembly plant is expected to have a direct positive impact. By assembling phones within the country, Transsion can bypass certain import tariffs, which could translate to more affordable prices for its popular devices. Furthermore, it promises quicker access to the latest models and improved after-sales support, cementing Nigeria's position as the undisputed tech hub of Africa.
