Massive Bangkok protests demand PM Paetongtarn’s resignation following leaked Cambodia phone transcript.
Last weekend, around 20,000 protesters—many conservative nationalists—gathered at Bangkok’s Victory Monument demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
The anger was sparked by a leaked phone call in which she addressed Cambodian leader Hun Sen as “uncle” and criticized a Thai general during a border crisis on May 28, seen as an insult to national pride.
Organizers claimed it was the largest antigovernment demonstration since Pheu Thai came to power in 2023, threatening escalation if the PM does not step down.
The protest reflects broader unease over the Shinawatra dynasty’s role in Thai politics, rival checkpoints of military influence, and investor fears—symbolized by a slump in Thailand’s stock market and capital flight.
With the court suspension, coalition collapse, and street unrest, Thailand’s ruling party is under intensifying pressure—making snap elections or further realignments increasingly possible.
