SGF George Akume urges Northern politicians to back President Tinubu now, wait until 2031 for rotating presidency.
Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has urged political figures from Nigeria’s northern region to support President Tinubu’s bid for a second term in 2027, while deferring aspirations for Northern presidency until 2031.
Akume argued that unity and timing are critical, contending that backing Tinubu now would strengthen the region’s influence and secure political goodwill ahead of future bids. He emphasized that rotation among regions remains essential, but strategic patience is key.
Some PDP and SDP voices have dismissed the advice, seeing it as political positioning amid opposition realignments, especially with the ADC gaining momentum. Critics argue that northern politicians should pursue their ambitions regardless of Tinubu’s standing.
Nonetheless, the message lays bare the internal calculations around 2027 alignments and may influence how coalitions shape up in the months ahead leading to the election.
