Russia Unleashes Massive Overnight Barrage on Ukraine; Sumy Hit Hard by Power Cuts
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed today 19 July 2025, that Russia launched a devastating overnight attack across Ukraine, deploying more than 30 missiles and 300 drones. This extensive assault impacted at least 10 regions, with the city of Sumy suffering particularly significant damage and widespread power outages.
In Sumy, located near the Russian border, the combined missile and drone strikes precisely targeted critical infrastructure facilities. This resulted in immediate and extensive power cuts, leaving several thousand families in the region without electricity. Rescue operations are currently underway in Sumy and other affected areas as emergency services assess the full extent of the damage.
While Sumy bore the brunt of the infrastructure attacks, other Ukrainian cities also faced severe consequences. In Odesa, a residential building was struck, injuring six people, including a child. Tragically, one fatality was reported across all affected regions, though the specific location was not immediately linked to Sumy. Furthermore, Pavlohrad also endured hits, with residential buildings and vital infrastructure sustaining damage.
This latest assault is consistent with Russia's ongoing strategy of targeting Ukrainian cities and their essential infrastructure. Sumy's proximity to the border has historically made it a frequent target for such attacks. Earlier in July, a similar Russian strike on a critical infrastructure facility in the Sumy district also caused power outages for thousands. Previous incidents in the region have regrettably led to civilian casualties and damage to civilian and medical facilities, underscoring the severe and ongoing humanitarian impact of these repeated aggressions.
