Reps Committee Pledges Robust Support to Enhance Nigeria's Air Defence
The House of Representatives Committee on Air Force has firmly pledged its unwavering commitment to bolster Nigeria's air defence capabilities through robust and sustained legislative interventions. This assurance was given by the Committee's Chairman, Honourable Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, following extensive oversight visits to key Nigerian Air Force (NAF) bases across the country, including Kaduna, Kano, Maiduguri, and Makurdi.
The visits, which concluded on Sunday, July 6, 2025, were conducted in line with the National Assembly's constitutional mandate to promote transparency, accountability, and improved operational efficiency within the NAF. Rurum emphasized that the Armed Forces are the bedrock of Nigeria's national security, with the Air Force playing a pivotal role in counter-terrorism efforts, internal security operations, and safeguarding the nation's airspace sovereignty.
During their oversight exercise, the Committee focused on assessing the state of infrastructure, personnel welfare, budget implementation, and the overall operational readiness of NAF units in these strategic locations. The lawmakers expressed deep concern over recurring challenges such as chronic underfunding of critical operations and infrastructure, delays in capital releases, poor welfare conditions, and inadequate accommodation for personnel. These issues, Rurum noted, directly impact morale, operational readiness, and the overall effectiveness of the Nigerian Air Force.
The Chairman assured NAF leadership and personnel that the Committee remains steadfast in advocating for improved funding, timely capital releases, and focused investments to address these gaps. He pledged to present their concerns to the National Assembly with determination to ensure the Nigerian Air Force receives the necessary support for optimal performance. The Committee engaged senior officers and personnel, received detailed briefings on operations and logistics, and reaffirmed the National Assembly's resolve to provide continuous legislative backing to strengthen the Nigerian Air Force's capabilities.
This commitment aligns with the broader national objective of modernizing the military to effectively tackle the prevailing security challenges.
