Poland to Reinstate Border Checks with Germany and Lithuania
Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced today that his government will reintroduce temporary border controls along the frontiers with Germany and Lithuania starting July 7, citing rising irregular migration (Reuters — see source turn0search7).
The move comes amid mounting pressure from nationalist opposition and increasing migrant spillovers from Germany.
Tusk stressed the measures are “necessary to reduce uncontrolled flows” and vowed they will be “temporary and closely monitored.”
Berlin echoed concerns, pointing out that Schengen must remain intact but supports Poland’s right to secure its borders—so long as mechanisms to curb smuggling and crime are enforced. Lithuania, too, will face parallel checks to the south.
Critics warn this signals a retreat from EU open-border ideals and may inflame nationalist sentiments. However, Tusk framed the policy as a balanced, pragmatic approach to a complex migration challenge.
