Trump’s CISA nominee Sean Plankey pledges to secure necessary cybersecurity funding before Senate committee.
In his Senate Homeland Security Committee confirmation hearing today, Sean Plankey, President Trump’s nominee to lead the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), emphasized that he will prioritize securing adequate federal funding for the agency. Plankey noted budget cuts in recent years had limited CISA’s operational capacity.
Plankey promised Congress that he would return fully to basics—assessing cybersecurity cyber threats, infrastructure resilience, and inter-agency coordination—while restoring funding levels to pre-cut standards. Senators from both parties welcomed his emphasis on protecting critical infrastructure.
During questioning, Plankey answered sharply on whether CISA could prevent Russian cyber intrusions or secure election systems. On election security, he cautioned that "cyber threats never sleep" and pledged bipartisan cooperation.
His strong performance earned compliment from committee members, though some pressed him on past ties to corporate cybersecurity entities. The nomination now advances to the full Senate vote, expected next month.
