Islamabad launches Federal Constabulary amid political unrest
Pakistan’s government announced on July 14, 2025, the establishment of the “Federal Constabulary,” expanding the existing Frontier Constabulary from a regional tribal unit into a national security apparatus.
The new force is intended for riot control, counter-terrorism, and internal security, and has received presidential approval under Asif Ali Zardari’s administration.
This move comes as former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s PTI party prepares a wave of nationwide protests, with opposition fear mounting that the government may use the Federal Constabulary to suppress dissent . PTI voices like Zulfikar Bukhari and Haris Khalique of the Human Rights Commission warned the force could be weaponized against political opponents.
Critics decry the bypassing of parliamentary debate and cite precedents of security forces being deployed in political crackdowns. The timing, just ahead of PTI activism, raises questions about domestic political dynamics and civil liberties.
As Pakistan positions the new force under the cloak of national unity, tensions simmer over whether it will ensure stability or suppress democratic rights.
