Transportation expert Kayode Opeifa takes helm of Nigeria Railway Corporation under Tinubu administration.
President Tinubu has appointed Kayode Opeifa, former Lagos State Commissioner for Transport, as Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), effective January 22, 2025. The move aims to accelerate reforms in the rail sector and improve inter‑state transportation infrastructure across Nigeria.
Opeifa brings over 25 years of experience in transport administration, having overseen Lagos’s commuter rail revitalization and bus rapid transit system expansion. He was sworn in amid hopes for greater connectivity and efficiency ahead of federal transport modernization plans.
Stakeholders expect Opeifa to focus on rail safety, network expansion, and public-private partnerships—key priorities for stimulating economic activity and reducing road congestion. Critics caution that bureaucratic inertia and funding constraints may limit ambitions.
Civil society groups have called for transparency and collaboration with state governments, insisting that equitable access and rural rail service must be central to national rail policy.
