Security forces kill at least 30 bandits in northwest Nigeria following brutal armed raids
In a decisive joint operation today, Nigerian police and military forces killed at least 30 gunmen responsible for launching coordinated attacks on villages in the northwest region. The assault occurred after hundreds of armed men targeted communities late Tuesday evening.
The operation, which wrapped up on Wednesday, resulted in three police and two soldiers killed in action, along with multiple injuries among security personnel. State Commissioner Nasir Mua’zu said the response was linear with efforts to protect vulnerable communities.
The northwest and north‑central regions have seen growing violence by bandit groups—many former herders—whose tactics include mass kidnappings and village raids. These incursions persist in areas with weak security infrastructure.
This crackdown coincides with Nigeria’s ongoing battle against insurgency in the northeast, which the UN says has killed roughly 35,000 people and displaced over 2 million. The dual threats pose long‑term challenges for national stability and unity.
