Nigeria rejects U.S. push to accept Venezuelan deportees.
Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar firmly rejected U.S. requests today that Nigeria take in deported Venezuelans, stating Nigeria is already grappling with domestic pressures and cannot serve as a haven for migrants.
Speaking from the BRICS summit in Brazil, Tuggar emphasized that with over 230 million people, Nigeria lacks the resources and infrastructure to accommodate deportees, particularly those with criminal histories.
The U.S. reportedly sought cooperation through “safe, dignified, and timely” transfers from countries like Liberia and Senegal. Critics argue the plan shifts U.S. immigration challenges onto Africa without sustainable support.
Nigeria’s firm stance signals broader resistance among African nations to being treated as an outlet for Western migration issues—a growing theme in global diplomatic debates on borders and sovereignty.
