Nigeria rejects U.S. appeal to accept Venezuelan deportees at BRICS summit.
Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar firmly rejected U.S. pressure to accept Venezuelan deportees, stating at the Brazil BRICS summit that Nigeria has "enough problems of its own" to handle .
Tuggar pointed out that Nigeria’s already strained resources and domestic challenges make it untenable to take on additional migration burdens. He also linked this demand to Nigeria’s recent BRICS+ membership, suggesting geopolitical motives behind the pressure.
The White House had reportedly urged several African nations to cooperate with a plan for "safe and dignified transfers" of Venezuelan migrants deported from the U.S. The request has sparked backlash over sovereignty and fairness.
Observers see the episode as a wider test of U.S.–Africa relations, especially as African nations assert greater autonomy through forums like BRICS and resist being seen as migration solutions for Western policies.
