Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation pushes for voting rights abroad in a bid to deepen democratic participation.
NiDO‑Worldwide, representing Nigerians living abroad, has formally called on the 10th National Assembly to expedite passage of the Diaspora Voting Bill. This legislation seeks to grant Nigerian citizens overseas the constitutional right to vote in national elections.
In a press release, NiDO highlighted that diaspora Nigerians contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economy and democracy, and inclusion in voting processes would reinforce the nation’s political legitimacy.
The group urged President Tinubu to sign the bill promptly once adopted by the legislature, emphasising the need for inclusive governance that embraces all Nigerians — home and abroad. Diaspora voting is increasingly recognised globally as a democratic standard.
If enacted, elections from 2027 onwards could see millions more added to the voter register—opening fresh avenues for political mobilisation and civic engagement abroad.
