Buhari’s Legacy: Nation Mourns Former President.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari passed away in London on July 13, 2025, at age 82. He led Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, following a military rule in the 1980s, becoming the first opposition candidate to unseat a sitting president . Known for his anti-corruption crusade and efforts to combat Boko Haram, his presidency also drew criticism for a sluggish economy, authoritarian tendencies, and controversial police brutality .
His remains were flown home to Daura, Katsina State, and laid to rest on July 15, 2025, following Islamic rites . Tributes poured in from political leaders and global allies. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Buhari’s commitment to India–Nigeria friendship .
Analysts say Buhari’s legacy remains mixed praised for his integrity and anti-corruption stance, yet marred by economic downturns and suppression of dissenters, especially during the #EndSARS protests in 2020 .
As Nigerians reflect on his death, the nation is also gauging how his legacy will influence the administration of President Tinubu and political dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections.
