On July 5, Elon Musk revealed plans for his proposed “America Party” to concentrate efforts on winning a small number of specific legislative districts—2 to 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House seats—designed to tip the balance in tightly contested Congresses.
This marks a shift from Musk’s prior role as a major Trump donor—he contributed $277 million to Trump’s 2024 run and later headed the government efficiency department known as “DOGE.” He now criticizes Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” and openly threatens to fund primary challengers to legislators supporting it.
An X poll (formerly Twitter) showed over 65 percent of roughly 1.25 million respondents backing the idea of a third party—reflecting widespread appetite for an alternative to the two-party system.
Trump has pushed back, publicly warning of consequences including potential deportation or contract cuts targeting Musk and his companies.
