Modi Embarks on Extensive Global Tour Ahead of BRICS Summit
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has commenced his most expansive global diplomatic tour since 2016, spanning July 2-9, 2025, with visits to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. This significant journey underscores India's robust diplomatic drive and its growing influence on the international stage, particularly ahead of the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The tour began in Ghana (July 2-3), where Modi engaged in discussions focused on strengthening economic partnership, defense, energy, and development cooperation. This marked the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ghana in three decades, during which Modi was conferred with The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana, the nation's prestigious national award.
Next, in Trinidad and Tobago (July 3-4), Prime Minister Modi delivered a parliamentary address to a joint session and was honored with the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean nation's highest civilian award, recognizing his influential global leadership and contributions.
The third leg took Modi to Argentina (July 4-5), where bilateral talks centered on enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, critical minerals (especially lithium for green energy transition), defence, and agriculture. This was the first bilateral visit by an Indian PM to Argentina in 57 years.
The centerpiece of the tour is the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (July 5-8). Here, Modi is participating in discussions on key global issues including the reform of global governance, peace and security, artificial intelligence, climate action, and economic and financial matters. India's commitment to multilateral engagement and its role in shaping a more inclusive and equitable global future are prominently showcased at this expanded BRICS gathering, which now includes new members like Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE.
Concluding his extensive tour, Prime Minister Modi is in Namibia (July 9) for bilateral talks with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and is also expected to deliver an address at the Parliament of Namibia. This marks his first visit to Namibia as Prime Minister and the third ever Prime Ministerial visit from India.
Analysts assert that this wide-ranging diplomatic tour highlights India’s expanding global footprint and its growing ambitions as a strategic leader. Modi's overarching message is clear: India is an active and responsible partner, ready to significantly shape the global economic and geopolitical order.
