Melbourne rocked by 'shocking' anti-Semitic attacks
Melbourne, Australia – Melbourne Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece has vehemently condemned a series of overnight attacks targeting a synagogue and an Israeli restaurant in the city on July 4, 2025. The incidents, which police are investigating for potential links, have been denounced by top officials as acts of hate and antisemitism.
Details of the Disturbances
The night began around 8 p.m. when a man reportedly committed arson at the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation synagogue. He allegedly doused the main doors with flammable liquid and set them ablaze. Roughly 20 worshippers inside observing Shabbat dinner narrowly escaped through a rear exit, thankfully with no injuries. Police have released a CCTV image of a suspect, described as a Caucasian male in his 30s with a beard and long hair.
Shortly after the synagogue attack, a group of approximately 20 masked protesters stormed the Miznon Israeli restaurant on Hardware Lane. Witnesses reported the group chanting "Death to the IDF" (Israel Defense Forces) while throwing furniture and food, shattering a window as patrons dined. One 28-year-old was arrested for hindering police.
Widespread Condemnation
Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece labeled these events "absolutely shocking" criminal acts, urging the community to "stand up against it." Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan echoed his condemnation, stating, "any attack on a place of worship is an act of hate, and any attack on a Jewish place of worship is an act of antisemitism."
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also weighed in, issuing a strong statement against the "shocking acts" and vowing that those responsible would "face the full force of the law." He assured the public that his government would provide all necessary support for the investigation.
While authorities have not yet officially declared the incidents acts of terrorism, police are treating them as serious criminal matters. These latest events follow a concerning wave of antisemitic incidents across Australia since late 2023.
