A wave of shock and grief has gripped Plateau State following a horrific gun attack on Tahoss village in the Riyom Local Government Area, which claimed the lives of at least 20 people in the early hours of Tuesday, July 15, 2025. State assembly member Dewan Gabriel swiftly confirmed the tragic incident, issuing a statement that underscored the alarming surge in attacks within his constituency, Riyom LGA. The grim reality of the massacre quickly spread through graphic videos and photographs circulating on social media, depicting scenes of numerous lifeless bodies and homes reduced to ashes.
According to Sati Shuwa, a local elected official overseeing the affected area, the heavily armed assailants, wielding both guns and machetes, unleashed their destructive raid seemingly undeterred by the presence of security personnel. The attackers not only murdered residents but also deliberately set ablaze their homes, leaving behind a trail of devastation.
While no group has immediately claimed responsibility for this latest bloodbath, such attacks have become a distressing commonality in Nigeria's northern region. The pervasive violence is widely attributed to deep-seated conflicts between local herders and farmers, perpetually locked in a struggle over dwindling land and water resources. Authorities and security analysts have observed a concerning trend in recent years, with the long-standing conflict growing deadlier as an increasing number of herdsmen are reportedly taking up arms. This attack mirrors a similar tragedy just last month in neighboring Benue State, where an estimated 150 lives were lost in a comparable assault.
Gabriel acknowledged the efforts of both the government and security agencies in addressing the ongoing insecurity but stressed the urgent imperative for a fundamental shift in tactics to effectively quell the escalating violence. The Tahoss incident tragically adds to a mounting tally of recent attacks in Plateau State, a region seemingly caught in a relentless grip of persistent violence.
