Iran’s new president signs law halting nuclear agency access to facilities, heightening global tensions.
Under new President Masoud Pezeshkian, Iran has enacted a law freezing cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, including barring inspection site access, following the IAEA chief’s rejection to visit key nuclear locations.
The legislation, swiftly passed by Iran’s parliament, vows to suspend all safety and verification protocols mandated by the 2015 nuclear accord and refusing to let IAEA inspect suspected facilities—escalating conflict with Western capitals.
Western powers, especially the EU and U.S., have denounced the move, warning of fresh sanctions and disrupting ongoing diplomacy. Tehran insists the step is retaliatory, citing recent “hostile enforcement” by the agency and “illicit inspections.”
Diplomats worry this could trigger a renewed nuclear standoff in the Middle East, raising concerns about proliferation and potential military escalation.
