GOP clears hurdle; final House vote expected amid growing debt concerns.

Today, House Republicans edged past a key procedural vote—219 to 213—to propel Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” into final debate . The legislation, already passed in the Senate, merges tax cuts, Medicaid and social program rollbacks, immigration enforcement funding, and a $5 trillion debt ceiling increase.

Trump himself dialed holdouts throughout the night, urging them to support the bill before the self-imposed July 4 deadline . Speaker Mike Johnson likened his engagement to an “involved president” and called the vote a major procedural victory.

Yet deep divisions persist. Five Republicans opposed the measure due to concerns about its massive fiscal impact and social program cuts . Democrats remain uniformly opposed, decrying potential loss of Medicaid coverage and disproportionate giveaways to wealthy households.

The next step is a final recorded vote, anticipated within hours. If approved, the Senate would reconvene, and Trump hopes to sign before Independence Day—leaving no room for error.
