House Freedom Caucus Targets Megabill’s Deficit
The House Freedom Caucus is ramping up pressure on Republican leaders over the BBB’s projected $5 trillion impact on the federal deficit . Led by conservative MPs, the group demanded deeper spending cuts and strict fiscal guardrails.
They flagged tax breaks and entitlement expansions in the bill as “budgetary recklessness,” especially alarmed by proposed Medicaid cuts that underwrite other provisions. Their demands include tighter debt limits and phased-in reductions to shield vulnerable communities.
In response, Speaker Mike Johnson has worked to reassure caucus members by promising future votes on deficit reduction packages and discretionary spending caps. Still, discontent bubbles over, with some threatening to withhold votes unless tougher amendments are adopted.
This internal tug-of-war between populist fiscal conservatives and Trump-aligned pragmatists could determine whether the bill passes intact—or fractures under ideological strain.
