House Confirms Push to Reform Electoral Act.
On July 23, 2025, the Chairman of the House Committee on Electoral Matters, Rep. Adebayo Balogun, reassured Nigerians of the National Assembly’s dedication to amending the Electoral Act to curb electoral fraud . Speaking at a policy dialogue by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), he stressed the need for reforms in both electoral and security frameworks.
Balogun pointed to recurring issues—voter intimidation, ballot snatching, and low turnout—as drivers for change, urging legislation that aligns with international best practices . Senate Committee Chair Sen. Victor Umeh echoed these concerns, emphasizing the central role of credible elections in democracy.
Additional input from the Inter‑Party Advisory Council warned of entrenched practices like bribery and compromised results that demand systemic response . These legislative efforts aim to ensure safe, transparent voting ahead of the 2027 polls.
