Gaza Faces Catastrophic Hunger Crisis Amid Ongoing Israeli Attacks; Aid Seekers Among Latest Casualties
The humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip has reached an increasingly dire state, characterized by relentless Israeli military operations, a severe shortage of humanitarian aid, and a rapidly escalating hunger crisis.

Aid Seekers Killed: A particularly alarming development is the rising number of Palestinians killed while attempting to access humanitarian aid. On July 31st alone, Gaza's civil defense agency reported that Israeli forces killed at least 30 people when they opened fire on a crowd waiting for aid in northern Gaza. Other reports from July 30th indicate that over 70 aid seekers were killed in various locations, including near the Zikim crossing and the Morag Corridor. Since late May 2025, more than 1,000 Palestinian civilians seeking aid have been killed in incidents involving Israeli forces, armed groups, and contractors.
Wider Attacks: Beyond incidents at aid distribution points, Israeli forces have continued bombardments and ground operations. Reports include strikes on displaced families' tents in Deir el-Balah and al-Mawasi, as well as an attack on an apartment building in northern Gaza City. Overall, medical sources reported at least 27 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces across the Gaza Strip since dawn on Thursday, July 31st.
Mounting Starvation and Accusations of Food as a Weapon:
The food security situation in Gaza is catastrophic, with widespread famine conditions taking hold.
Famine Thresholds Reached: UN-backed food security experts, specifically the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) platform, warned on July 29, 2025, that the "worst-case scenario of famine is currently playing out in Gaza." Two out of the three famine thresholds have been demonstrably met: plummeting food consumption and acute malnutrition. Data reveals that more than one in three people (39%) are now going days at a time without eating. Over 500,000 people, nearly a quarter of Gaza's population, are enduring famine-like conditions, while the remaining population faces emergency levels of hunger.
Starvation Deaths Surge: The number of deaths directly attributable to malnutrition is rising sharply. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on July 27, 2025, that of 74 malnutrition-related deaths in 2025, a staggering 63 occurred in July, including 24 children under five. Gaza's health authorities reported on July 29th that malnutrition had killed 79 people in Gaza over the previous week alone, surpassing the total for the preceding 21 months of conflict. The total number of confirmed deaths from starvation in the enclave has reached at least 154, with 89 of them being children.
Hamas Accusations: Hamas has consistently accused Israel of deliberately using starvation as a weapon of war. They contend that Israel is intentionally depriving innocent civilians of essential necessities like food, medicine, and water, and that aid has been weaponized to create "chaos and looting." This accusation is further fueled by reported statements from some Israeli officials, with Israel's defense minister reportedly describing the blockade as a "main pressure lever" against Hamas and indicating no plans to ease restrictions, despite urgent UN warnings.
Severe Aid Restrictions: Despite repeated international calls and rulings from the International Court of Justice, humanitarian access to Gaza remains severely restricted. Aid convoys are frequently obstructed, looted, or face significant delays, and despite some alternative efforts like air-drops, the volume of aid entering Gaza is a mere fraction of what is critically needed to avert widespread famine. The UN has reiterated that aid deliveries can only succeed if Israel approves the rapid and unhindered movement of convoys through its checkpoints.
The humanitarian situation is further exacerbated by the continued conflict, unprecedented mass displacement, and the near-total collapse of essential services and infrastructure across Gaza.
