The French National Assembly narrowly approved a divisive immigration bill today that imposes tighter controls on asylum seekers and reduces access to welfare for undocumented migrants.
Pushed by Marine Le Pen’s National Rally and supported by segments of President Emmanuel Macron’s alliance, the legislation marks a rightward shift in French immigration policy.
Critics argue the bill panders to xenophobic sentiments and undermines France’s humanitarian legacy. “This is not who we are,” shouted left-wing lawmakers as the final votes were counted.
The bill allows deportation of migrants convicted of crimes and restricts family reunification programs. Macron’s centrist Renaissance party is now deeply fractured, with several MPs resigning in protest.
The debate has reignited national identity politics in France, already a key theme ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Le Pen hailed the vote as a “victory for the French people.”
