Four Young Men Drown in Blocked Waterway in Kano, Authorities Issue Warning
Kano State is in mourning following a tragic incident on Friday, July 18, 2025, where four young men drowned in a blocked waterway in the Zangon Kaya area of Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area. The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the fatalities and is urging the public to avoid unsafe water channels.

Location and Time: The drownings occurred at Zangon Kaya in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area on Friday afternoon, July 18, 2025. The Kano State Fire Service received an emergency call around 1:48 PM.
Circumstances of the Drowning: The unfortunate incident took place in a section of a waterway that had accumulated a dangerous volume of water due to ongoing railway line construction, creating a hazardous pool. According to Saminu Abdullahi, Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, the sequence of events began when two of the victims entered the water to swim and became trapped. A third individual then bravely entered the blocked drain in an attempt to rescue them but also became stuck. Tragically, a fourth person joined the rescue effort and similarly succumbed, becoming trapped in the waterway. Abdullahi attributed the incident to "local swimming in a blocked sewer," emphasizing the inherent dangers of entering such unauthorized and stagnant channels.
Victims Identified: The Kano State Fire Service officially identified the four young men who lost their lives as:
Bashir Sani, 28
Nasirudden Tasi'u, 25
Usman Ubale, 26
Yakubu Muhammed, 22
Rescue Efforts and Aftermath: Upon receiving the distress call, the Kano State Fire Service immediately dispatched its rescue team. Before the professional rescuers arrived, residents of the area managed to pull out two of the victims. The fire service team then successfully recovered the remaining two victims. All four individuals were brought out unconscious and were later confirmed deceased. Their bodies have since been handed over to SP Abdulkadir Albasu of the Dawanau Police Division for further investigation.
Authorities Issue Stern Warning:
Alhaji Sani Anas, Director of the Kano State Fire Service, extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. He also issued a strong public warning, advising residents to "steer clear of blocked or unauthorized water channels," reiterating that these areas are extremely unsafe for swimming, recreation, or any other activity.
