A tragic shooting incident unfolded on Monday, July 28, 2025, at an office building in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including a New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer, and the suspected gunman. A fifth person remains in critical condition.

Around 6:28 p.m., surveillance video captured Tamura exiting a double-parked BMW on Park Avenue, armed with an M4 rifle.
He immediately entered the building's lobby and opened fire on Officer Didarul Islam, fatally wounding him.
Tamura then shot a woman attempting to take cover behind a pillar and proceeded to "spray" the lobby with gunfire, killing a security guard and wounding another man.
He subsequently took an elevator to the 33rd floor, which houses Rudin Management (the building's owner), where he continued firing and killed another person.
The rampage concluded when Tamura took his own life.
Weaponry:
Tamura was armed with a .223-caliber AR-15-style rifle. A rifle case containing additional rounds, a loaded revolver, ammunition, magazines, a backpack, and prescribed medication were later discovered in his vehicle.
Motive and Background:
While a clear motive for the attack has not yet been established, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that Tamura had a "documented mental health history." Investigators are actively working to understand why he targeted this specific location.
Preliminary findings indicate Tamura had driven his vehicle across the country in the days leading up to the shooting, passing through Colorado, Nebraska, and Iowa. He reportedly held a concealed firearm permit issued by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police in 2022. A suicide note found in Tamura's pocket reportedly claimed "football gave me CTE" (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) and expressed grievances about the NFL, requesting his brain be studied. Mayor Eric Adams suggested that Tamura may have intended to target the NFL offices, which are located on lower floors of the same building, but went to the wrong floor.
