On July 16, a Beijing court sentenced Wu Yingjie—former Communist Party secretary of Tibet—to death with a two-year reprieve on charges of accepting approximately 343 million yuan in bribes.
Wu’s death sentence is automatically reduced to life imprisonment if he neither commits new crimes nor breaches conditions during the two-year reprieve, as stipulated by Chinese legal practice.
His prosecution underscores Beijing’s high-profile anti-corruption campaign aimed at consolidating power and projecting integrity, particularly among officials with sensitive regional influence.
Wu was previously sanctioned by both the U.S. and Canada in 2022 for alleged human rights abuses in Tibet, complicating international reactions to his sentencing.
