Enugu Air Takes Flight: State-Owned Airline Set to Revolutionize Regional Travel
The skies over Enugu are abuzz with excitement as Enugu Air, the new state-owned commercial airline, officially launched its operations on Monday, July 7, 2025. Inaugural flights departed from the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, fulfilling Governor Peter Mbah's ambitious vision to transform the state into a major aviation hub for Nigeria.
The launch ceremony, a significant event for the region, saw the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, formally inaugurate the airline. Governor Mbah hailed the achievement as a "giant leap for the state and a gold standard for government-private sector partnership," emphasizing its alignment with his administration's goal of positioning Enugu as a premier destination for investment, living, and tourism.
Initial Routes Form "Golden Triangle," Expansion on the Horizon
Enugu Air is kicking off operations with an initial fleet of three Embraer jets, specifically from the E170 and E190 series. Dr. Obi Ozor, Enugu State's Commissioner for Transportation, noted these aircraft were selected for their efficiency, passenger comfort, and suitability for regional routes.
The airline's initial services will form a strategic "golden triangle," directly connecting Enugu to the bustling cities of Abuja and Lagos. Plans for immediate expansion include flights to other key Nigerian urban centers such as Port Harcourt, Owerri, Benin, and Kano, with future aspirations to introduce international destinations. This expansion is designed to significantly enhance regional air travel, boost state pride, and elevate Enugu's national and global profile.

Governor Mbah articulated that Enugu Air represents far more than just a new airline. He described it as a bold stride in creating crucial enablers for enterprise and opening up economic sectors previously considered inaccessible. While Enugu Air is proudly a state-owned initiative, its booking system currently directs users to XEJet's website for ticket purchases. XEJet, lauded by Minister Keyamo as a highly competent and entirely Nigerian-owned aviation industry player, serves as a crucial partner and operator for Enugu Air.
