Country music legend Dolly Parton has announced she's putting new music on hold as she grieves the loss of her beloved husband, Carl Dean. Dean passed away in March 2025 at the age of 82, after nearly 60 years of marriage to the iconic singer-songwriter.
Parton, 79, shared the deeply personal news during an appearance on Khloé Kardashian's podcast, "Khloé in Wonder Land." The "Jolene" singer explained that her ongoing grief is making it difficult to complete new songs. "I have many wonderful, beautiful ideas," Parton stated, "but I can't afford the luxury of getting that emotional right now to fully dedicate myself to new musical projects." She assured fans that she will "later" finish these songs, but they are currently "on hold."
Carl Dean was famously private throughout their long relationship, rarely appearing in public with his superstar wife. However, his unwavering presence was a significant inspiration for some of Parton's most cherished hits, including the timeless "Jolene."
Parton has openly spoken about finding strength in her faith during this incredibly challenging time. She believes she will be reunited with Dean and feels his presence daily through her memories. The singer also revealed that Dean had been "ill for quite a while" before his passing, bringing her peace in knowing he is no longer suffering.
While new musical releases are on pause, Parton intends to channel her energy into other ventures, ensuring her husband's memory remains a part of everything she does. Shortly after his death in March, she released a poignant tribute song titled "If You Hadn't Been There," honoring their enduring love and his steadfast support throughout her illustrious career.
