In a devastating ambush in central Nigeria’s Plateau State, bandits killed at least 70 community security volunteers around the Kukawa and Bunyun areas while they traveled toward known hideouts of criminal gangs.
A local volunteer leader, Aliyu Baffa, reported that over 60 volunteers were buried in Kukawa alone, while another 10 were confirmed dead in Bunyun. Several homes were also torched amid the violence.
This massacre is emblematic of a growing trend of armed groups targeting local defense formations, exacerbating fears among rural populations. It raises serious questions about government strategies to secure vulnerable communities and support grassroots protection efforts.
Civil society leaders have called for increased federal support for volunteer networks and enhanced intelligence gathering. Without urgent intervention, the mobilized volunteers may withdraw, further weakening local security.
