AUC Chairperson Convenes Coordination Meeting with Regional Bodies
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, convened a high-level coordination meeting with the Heads of Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Regional Mechanisms (RMs), and the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD (AUDA-NEPAD) today. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 7th AU Mid-Year Coordination Meeting in Malabo.
The stated objective of the gathering was to enhance synergy, coherence, and operational effectiveness across Africa's integration, development, and financial institutions, aiming to strengthen collaboration among these continental and regional bodies.
This meeting follows prior discussions held on July 3, indicating an ongoing process to streamline coordination among key African institutions. The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), currently holding the Chair of the Inter-RECs Coordination Committee, co-chaired the meeting.
Discussions and Outcomes:
Participants provided updates on their respective activities and initiatives. Discussions centered on reaffirming common priorities for the continent's development and integration agenda. Methods to accelerate the implementation of Agenda 2063, the African Union's framework for a prosperous and peaceful Africa, were explored.
AUC Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf reiterated the AU's commitment to unity of purpose, enhanced collaboration, and joint delivery to achieve "the Africa We Want." Heads of the RECs acknowledged recent developments under the AUC's leadership and expressed support for increased coordination in pursuit of the continent's stated goals.
Significance of the Mid-Year Coordination Meeting (MYCM):
The Mid-Year Coordination Meeting (MYCM) is an event on the AU calendar that brings together the African Union, RECs, RMs, and Member States. It serves as a platform to align continental and regional efforts, evaluate progress on Agenda 2063, and address potential duplication of initiatives across Africa's integration agenda. The 7th MYCM in Malabo is taking place under the AU's 2025 theme: "Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations."
