Malaysia urges ASEAN to deepen trade ties as Trump’s tariffs loom.
At today’s ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim highlighted the growing threat posed by unilateral U.S. tariffs. He urged ASEAN nations to strengthen internal economic resilience through deeper trade cooperation.
Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and others have been targeted with proposed Trump tariffs of 25–40%. Vietnam secured a tariff reduction, but other ASEAN members are seeking similar reprieves through diplomacy and negotiation.
Draft communiques from the meeting branded the U.S. approach “counterproductive,” expressing concern over destabilizing global trade fragmentation. The bloc also discussed coordination on South China Sea conduct codes and ongoing Myanmar conflict.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s attendance underlined U.S. intent to engage with Asian partners. However, ASEAN stressed non-retaliation and unity, positioning internal trade as the primary buffer.
