Nigeria’s African Democratic Congress (ADC) today confirmed that prominent politicians Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar have joined the party, triggering a potential shake‑up ahead of the 2027 elections . The move is widely seen as consolidating opposition momentum against President Tinubu’s APC.
ICP analyst Iliyasu Hadi said the realignment may allow ADC to eclipse the PDP and become the true main opposition party. ADC’s Washington-based chair, David Mark, underscored their outright ambition of ending one-party dominance .
The consolidation arrives amid growing frustration with Tinubu’s administration over economic performance and diplomatic positioning. ADC hopes to present a united front and attract voters across ethnic and regional divides.
However, the new coalition also faces internal challenges: integrating diverse ideologies, managing leadership disputes, and building grassroots support remain key tasks ahead of 2027.
