26 Years on Death Row: Governor Otti Secures Freedom for Three Inmates
In a significant triumph for justice and human rights, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has successfully secured the release of three Nigerian inmates who languished on death row for a staggering 26 years at Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison in Lagos. The emotionally charged moment was confirmed on Saturday, July 5, 2025, as Governor Otti personally received the freed men at Government House in Umuahia.
Among those granted a new lease on life are Mr. Ogbonnaya Igbojionu, an Abia indigene from Ibere in Ikwuano LGA, and Olawale Adediji, a Yoruba man. A third individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, was also released but unable to travel to meet the Governor.
The remarkable intervention was set in motion by a persistent Simon Oshi from Enugu State, who, having learned of their plight through popular social media influencer Olumide Ogunsanwo (known as 'Sea King'), brought the case to Governor Otti's attention. Upon receiving the information, Governor Otti immediately dispatched the Abia State Attorney General to verify the distressing situation. Once confirmed, he took decisive action, writing to the Lagos and Ogun State governments, a process that culminated in the men's long-awaited freedom.
Mr. Ogbonnaya Igbojionu, speaking on behalf of his fellow ex-inmates, recounted his harrowing ordeal. A generator dealer, he was arrested in 1999 after purchasing a generator, accused of acquiring stolen property. He was subsequently sentenced to death in 2003, spending a total of 26 years incarcerated until his release this year. He expressed profound gratitude to Governor Otti for his life-changing intervention.
Receiving the men, Governor Otti lauded Oshi for his unwavering persistence and commended Ogunsanwo for leveraging his platform to advocate for justice. He also extended appreciation to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for his crucial cooperation. Governor Otti assured the newly freed individuals of comprehensive support for their reintegration into society, directing his Commissioners for Local Government and Power and Public Utilities to collaborate with relevant agencies on their rehabilitation.
This humanitarian act aligns seamlessly with Governor Otti's consistent advocacy for the humane treatment of inmates and the decongestion of correctional centers since assuming office. He has previously emphasized his administration's commitment to rehabilitating and improving prison conditions in Abia, ensuring that those held for minor offenses are given a second chance at life.
